Fermented foods have long been part of traditional diets across Asia, including Thailand. In recent years, they have gained renewed interest among health-conscious consumers due to their association with gut health, digestion, and overall wellbeing.
From live fermented drinks such as kombucha and kefir to kimchi, miso, and fermented vegetables, Thailand now offers a growing range of fermented products. These can be found in supermarkets, organic shops, restaurants, farmers’ markets, and through small local producers. This guide explores where to buy fermented foods in Thailand, what types are available, and what to look for when choosing them.
What Are Fermented Foods?
Fermented foods are created through a natural process in which beneficial bacteria, yeast, or fungi break down sugars and starches. As a result, these foods often develop deeper flavours, improved digestibility, and longer shelf lives.
Common fermented foods include yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, kombucha, natto, and fermented vegetables. For generations, cultures around the world have relied on fermentation both to preserve food and to enhance taste.

In addition to modern fermented products, Thailand has a rich tradition of fermented foods that are widely available at local markets:

- Fermented sausages (Sai krok Isan)
These foods form an important part of Thai cuisine and can be found in wet markets, local grocery stores, and specialty food shops.
Tips for Buying Fermented Foods in Thailand
- Check storage conditions: Some fermented foods require refrigeration to maintain quality.
- Read labels carefully: Look for products with simple ingredient lists and minimal additives.
- Ask about fermentation methods: Small producers are often happy to explain how their products are made.
- Start small: If you are new to fermented foods, begin with milder options such as yogurt, kefir, or lightly fermented vegetables.
